Mercari to offer zero selling fees, raising competition with Poshmark
by Jefferson Mao •March 28, 2024
Mercari, the popular online marketplace for secondhand goods, announced yesterday that it will no longer take a cut of sales.
"Effective March 27, 2024 at 8:30 AM ET, the selling fee for new listings will be 0%
Note: Listings created before 8:30 AM ET on March 27, 2024 will be subject to a selling fee of 10% of the item price when a sale is completed unless the listing has been updated on or after March 27, 2024."
While competitors raise seller fees, Mercari becomes the first major U.S. resale platform to eliminate them entirely. This applies to all new listings starting today and will be implemented sitewide soon.
"Our commitment is to make selling pre-owned items effortless and rewarding," says John Lagerling, Mercari U.S. CEO. "By removing seller fees, we're setting a new standard and attracting more sellers to Mercari. This allows sellers to offer competitive pricing and keep more of their earnings, benefiting everyone seeking to declutter."
Simplifying Buyer Experience with Streamlined Returns
In addition to zero seller fees, Mercari is prioritizing buyer satisfaction with a revamped return policy. A buyer service fee will now cover hassle-free returns. For the first time, Mercari allows buyers to initiate returns within three days for any reason and receive a refund minus applicable fees. This applies to all categories, including:
- Games and toys
- Collectibles and trading cards
- Unique vintage finds
- Fashion and home goods
- Beauty products
- Authenticated luxury items
"Our marketplace boasts the hottest trends and one-of-a-kind treasures," says Lagerling. "This new model should solidify our lead in offering the best inventory, especially in categories Mercari users love."
Unprecedented Fee Structure Propels Mercari to the Forefront
In addition to waiving seller fees, Mercari will now charge buyers a processing fee:
"Effective March 27, 2024 at 8:30 AM ET, Mercari will charge buyers a payment processing fee at the time of purchase."

This innovative fee structure is a first in the U.S. online resale market. Mercari stands alone as the only major platform offering zero listing and selling fees, on top of existing nationwide shipping discounts.
