Depop, a leading platform for buying and selling pre-loved clothing, announced that it was getting rid of its seller fees, allowing its users to keep 100% of their sales’ proceeds.

This change applies to new listings created after March 20, 2024.

In doing so, Depop joined Vinted as the only two marketplaces with zero seller fees. In a similar effort to reduce the fee burden for sellers, Mercari cut its seller fees entirely in March 2024.

The choice by both to move this burden is evocative of who they want to attract to their platforms: sellers.

Why is Depop making this change?

  • Empowering Sellers: Depop wants to encourage sellers to list more items, boosting the variety and affordability of secondhand fashion in the UK.
  • Enhanced Buyer Experience: A wider selection empowers buyers with greater choice and potentially lower prices.
  • Continued Platform Improvement: To support these changes, Depop will introduce a buyer fee starting April 15, 2024.
    • This fee, capped at 5% of the purchase price plus £1 (excluding taxes and postage), will fund ongoing investments in Depop Protection, customer support, platform enhancements, and community growth.

Some factors to note:

  • Zero selling fees apply to UK sellers with GBP sales only.
  • Standard payment processing fees still apply.

Empowering sellers to list more and earn more

Beyond the fee structure, Depop highlights its dedication to improving the user experience for both buyers and sellers. Here are some key achievements:

  • Search Efficiency: Improved search technology increases the likelihood of buyers finding desired items by 42%.
  • Smarter Matching: Depop's recommendation engine helps buyers discover perfect matches from their vast 34-million-item catalog, resulting in a 54% increase in product views from recommendations.
  • Enhanced Support: Depop boasts a 40% improvement in resolving support inquiries and a 48% increase in average response times compared to the previous year.
  • Faster Product Development: New features like "Send Offer" and "Boosted Listings" demonstrate Depop's focus on innovation, with a 70% increase in product development speed.
  • Simplified Listing: AI-powered autofill streamlines the listing process, making it easier and faster for sellers to create listings, ultimately leading to more choices for buyers.
