Black Friday marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season, and with 66% of consumers planning their Black Friday shopping in advance, buyers looking for better deals (and a more conservative budget) will still be flocking to thrift shops both in-store and online for their pre-holiday shopping.

As a reseller, you want to hit your Black Friday sales quota by doing three things:

  • Position attractive but affordable thrifted items
  • Stay ahead of others offering Black Friday sales
  • Sell out your current stock

Below we share five categories for your Black Friday thrift flipping that’s not only sustainable for the environment, but also a good deal for your buyers and of course, profits for you, the reseller.

Why people are likely to purchase second-hand on Black Friday

Being able to purchase items for a fraction of its original price attract buyers to look at thrift shops, according to Social Lens Research. ThredUp’s 2025 report supports this finding, mentioning affording higher-end brands as one of the top 5 reasons why people buy secondhand. With holiday sales seen as an opportunity to source quality items (often for gift-giving), Black Friday becomes a great opportunity for thrift resellers and buyers alike.

What to Thrift Flip as a Reseller on Black Friday

Branded apparel

Buyers are looking to score branded clothing for way less than the original price; offering good quality branded items with minimal flaws can be your edge for this Black Friday sale.

Include the following in your listing:

  • Outerwear like trench coats, jackets
  • Athleisure items that are barely worn
  • Vintage tees and jeans
  • Limited-edition clothing

Skip the following:

  • Items that are branded but in poor condition
  • Fast-fashion pieces like Shein, Fashion Nova, etc.
  • Basics like tank tops, generic tees, and other clothing that can be bought at the mall brand-new
  • Monogrammed or personalized items

Electronics

Black Friday is a great day for bargain seekers who are eyeing to upgrade their electronics without breaking the bank. Popular items include last-season phones, gaming consoles, and tablets.

What to look for:

Smartphones and Tablets: People often upgrade to the latest versions for various reasons, so models from one to two years ago are still good for thrift-flipping.  Some older versions are still good for reselling based on its features.

E-readers: Secondhand Kindles and other similar e-readers are often a hit during Black Friday as buyers want to replace books with lighter but affordable gadgets for reading.

Gaming Consoles: Gaming consoles are one of the bestsellers in the reselling space. With cost savings as one of the driving forces in refurbishing gaming consoles, this niche is one to make a pretty profit from. Popular models like Xbox, Sony, Nintendo and PlayStation are still a hit among buyers even if they are a few years older; limited-edition ones are also bought as collectors’ item.

Headphones and Speakers: These items sell like pancakes on Black Friday for people who want to upgrade their setup just a little. Choose to resell items that don’t have obvious signs of wear and tear (especially for headsets).

What to avoid:

Broken, damaged electronics: Hobbyists may find restoring old gadgets for fun, but Black Friday shoppers are usually looking for a sweet deal, not for another project to work on. Besides, old gadgets like TVs and stereos with obsolete parts are hard to upcycle and resell, leaving your profit tanking.

Items with missing components: Missing cables, chargers or remote controls can be a little hassle for a buyer and may stay longer in your inventory, unsold. Try to compensate by offering compatible accessories.

Overpriced Items: As much as possible, skip reselling items that are already overpriced to begin with. Not every Black Friday shopper is a collector and may not appreciate prices that rival brand-new offers.

Furniture and Home Furnishings

While furniture typically experience a surge in sales during Black Friday, some consumers turn to thrift shops for furniture and other home furnishings for secondhand pieces that hold charm.

While there’s nothing like owning brand-new, modern pieces, buyers also flock to secondhand stores to look for furniture with character-think pieces that would easily fit into a Bridgerton aesthetic, or modular pieces that need only a little paint to look new.

Choose pieces which are:

  • Easy to upcycle: Some homeowners scour second hand furniture thrift shops for pieces that are well-maintained, or easy to refurbish. Look for tables, chairs and bookshelves with timeless designs.
  • Mid-20th century vintage: Vintage furniture from the mid-20th century often adds a homey feel. These pieces are favored by many and would fit many home aesthetic. A little bit of polish here and there, and it can sell for a good price.
  • Decorative items: For buyers with a slightly tight budget, buying small items like tugs, vases and paintings can help them upgrade their space without spending a lot. These items tend to sell quickly, giving you a fast sales turnover.

Skip these pieces:

  • Damaged furniture: Furniture that has missing legs, hard-to-replace hinges, and stuck drawers are a little bit harder to resell than others. You may even need to spend extra for repairs before you can successfully flip it. The same goes for sofas and mattresses with questionable stains.
  • Oversized items:  Avoid buying these items for thrift-flipping-more often than not, you will need to charge higher for shipping large items and not all buyers fancy a large piece that will occupy most of their living space. Smaller tables, shelves and chairs have a higher chance of getting sold.

Toys and Games

Many toy enthusiasts and collectors flock to Black Friday sales for thrifted board games and other toys. Parents also like to see pre-loved options for gifting to their children. Resellers can make a good profit offering action figures, vintage toys and educational items like blocks and puzzles during this season.

Look for:

  • Collector’s items: Dolls, toy sets and vintage action figures fetch a good price, especially limited-edition ones.
  • Video games: You can also profit by reselling gently-used video games for popular game consoles.
  • Board games and puzzles: Pick ones in good condition for reselling. Signed ones  from famous previous owners are highly desirable.
  • Toys made from premium material: Think marble chess sets, and other handcrafted toys.

Skip reselling:

  • Damaged toys: These rarely sell fast and often has low value.
  • Mass-produced toys: These are often made with synthetic, cheap material and is unlikely to last long without damage, lowering its resale value.

Books, DVDs, and other media

Books never goes out of demand, and Black Friday is a chance for bookworms to buy discounted but good condition books. Also, media like CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and even cassette tapes still find a market among vintage collectors. Offer these in your thrift shop to cater to a diverse customer base.

Sell the following:

  • Autographed hardcovers:  These books sell handsomely, especially when in excellent condition. Special editions and complete sets are also popular choices.
  • Vintage vinyl records: Many music lovers are starting to appreciate vinyl records again. Pro tip: sell players along with these records, so buyers can have a go and play these records.
  • Limited edition Blu-rays, DVDs and CDs: Boxed sets and limited edition items can be resold at premium prices. Plus points if the items are sealed.

Don’t sell these items:

  • Books with torn covers and missing pages:  These items don't have high value.
  • Common media: It’s best to stick with limited releases rather than selling something everyone can buy easily/movies with a lot of copies.

Tips to Stay Ahead During Black Friday Reselling

  • Clean your items. Value rises when buyers can see the item’s condition clearly, free from dust, marks and stains.
  • Always declare the flaws as honestly as possible. This step is especially true when making online listings.
  • Research your target marker before selling an item. This will help you name the exact price and accept offers within your price range.
  • Do not overprice nor underprice. Good quality items usually command a higher profit margin, but stay away from overpricing. This can cause you to lose loyal customers. Also, do not sell for less than the amount you brought the item for, Instead, increase value by creating “bundles”.
