If you’ve been in the reselling business for some time, you might think you’ve seen it all on reselling platforms. Some start as fast-paced venture and fizzle as soon as they appear. Some have more than their fair share of scams and complaints, and others have mixed reviews from sellers and buyers worldwide.

Enter Mercari: where designer sneakers fall below retail price, electronics go on discounted sales, and collectibles are sold for more affordable prices. It’s normal to hesitate and ask: Is Mercari legit?

Short answer: Yes, but experiences may vary from seller to seller and from buyer to buyer**.** It has [**47.3 billion JPY (as of June 2024)**](https://about.mercari.com/en/about/about-us/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) in capital. Its rapid growth since its launch in 2013 puts sellers and buyers at ease. Read on to learn how to get paid, the pros and cons, and to weigh whether it’s worth the time and effort.

## What is Mercari?

Mercari belongs in the peer-to-peer marketplace category, where sellers and buyers directly interact with one another. It was founded in Japan and expanded to the United States thereafter. Mercari’s broad categories, niche collections, and its appeal to casual sellers make it a strong competitor against [**eBay,**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/best-items-to-sell-on-ebay-in-2026?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) Depop, and Poshmark.

Electronics is one of Mercari’s popular categories, making it come up against eBay. For watches, clothing, and accessories, it can rival [**Depop**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/how-to-sell-on-depop?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)’s fast-rising inventory.

## How Mercari Works for Sellers

Mercari, like any other platform, needs you to complete the signup process and account verification. [**Profile verification**](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/topics/account/guides/verification-and-badges/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)allows you to unlock more Mercari sales tools and gain buyer trust. Once done, you may proceed with selling.

Mercari makes for a fast and user-friendly selling process. Start by taking photos of your item, writing a description, and setting a fixed price. Buyers can purchase the items as-is or send an offer for a lower price which the seller may choose to accept, decline, or even counter.

After a sale is made, the seller ships the item using prepaid labels from Mercari. Items are shipped with USPS, FedEx, or UPS Ground packages. For books and other printed media, there is also USPS Media Mail and a First-Class Envelope exclusively for trading cards.

Once sold, Mercari’s escrow service keeps the buyer’s payment until delivery is confirmed, then releases it to the seller’s account.

### How to Get Paid in Mercari

Sellers can choose to get paid via Instant Pay or ACH direct deposit withdrawal. Here’s a table to help you compare the two.

| Service | Fee | Frequency | Amount cap | How fast the money is reflected in your account | Conditions |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Instant Pay | $3 flat fee per withdrawal | Once per day | Up to $600 per month | Usually within minutes, up to 30 minutes depending on the bank | Requires government ID verification, eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card, the latest app version required |
| Direct Deposit (ACH) | Free ( $2 fee only if withdrawal fails ) | Once per day | No specific cap mentioned | Typically 5–7 business days | Must use checking account, only one bank account per Mercari account, not processed on bank or company holidays |

## Mercari Fees breakdown

Being familiar with Mercari fees is a must before deciding to sell on the platform. In 2025, Mercari seller fees changed to a flat percentage model.

Mercari’s fee structure as of January 6, 2025, is as follows:

| Category | Fee | How it works |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Seller fee | 10% | Sellers pay a flat 10% fee on the total sale amount, including the item price and buyer-paid shipping |
| Buyer protection fee | 3.6% | Buyers pay a 3.6% protection fee on the total purchase amount, including the item price and shipping |
| Fee calculation base | Item price + buyer-paid shipping | Both seller and buyer fees are calculated using the full transaction total |

The new Mercari seller fees apply to every sale after January 12, 2026.

### Calculating the net take-home for a $30 item

For example, an item priced at **$30** and with a shipping fee of **$7.97** (paid by the buyer) is **$37.97 in total**. Upon applying the buyer protection fee of **3.6% ($1.37)** and adding it to the total transaction, the buyer has to pay an all-in total of **$39.34**.

Meanwhile for the seller, with the total purchase amount of **$37.97**, the seller fee is **$3.80**, making the net amount **$34.17 for the seller**.

### Calculation for a $100 item

An item priced at **$100** and with a shipping fee of **$7.97** (paid by the buyer) is **$107.97 in total**. Add the buyer protection fee of **3.6% ($3.89)** to the total transaction, and the buyer has to pay an all-in total of **$111.86**.

The seller fee of $10.80**(10%)**gets deducted from the total purchase amount of**$107.97.**Seller gets **$97.17**as the net amount**.**

These examples show how Mercari fees can affect your final payout.

**Note:**Shipping fee varies based on the weight and dimensions of the item and the courier. Check current Mercari shipping fees [**here**](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/169/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io).

### Pricing strategy when selling on Mercari

Calculating listing price and final profit margin beforehand is a wise move for sellers. Since Mercari is known for lower-priced items, new sellers might want to jump on the bandwagon and price their items low. Calculating these numbers early on may help find a decent profit margin.

Mercari’s 10% flat seller fee is another thing to consider when pricing. Drawing from the example above for a $100 item, the seller has a lower net take-home compared to the listing price. Sellers cover the item value and platform costs, so adjusting prices upward, even for secondhand items, help them keep a balance between pricing and being attractive to buyers.

## Is Mercari safe?

![Mercari](https://storage.ghost.io/c/e9/2c/e92c0268-0a3c-45b5-8c3a-b81ee6ef33fd/content/images/2026/03/close-up-smartphone-atm.jpg)

If you’re wondering if Mercari is legit, safety policies must be one of the first thing you should check. Mercari employs several policies that keep both buyer and seller interactions safe while using the platform. However, like any other platform, scams and risks still exist, albeit on a smaller scale. Educating oneself on these risks helps both buyers and sellers stay protected.

The following are the common safety issues on Mercari.

### Counterfeits

Seen more among high-ticket items like electronics, designer bags, clothing, and sneakers. Mercari counters this by [**Mercari Authenticate,**](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/475/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) a service available for both shoppers and sellers. Listings with the diamond sign indicate that they went under the authentication process successfully.

For sellers, having your item authenticated is fast and easy—it takes a few snaps and you’ll get a decision in less than 48 hours. It costs $5 for authentication and another $10 for a Certificate of Authenticity.

Items which don’t pass the authentication process are removed from listings, so there’s fewer chances that a fake item will get sold.

### False return claims/switch scams

This scam involves claims of damage or “not as described” so returns and refunds can be filed. A more elaborate scheme swaps out the original item with a similar but damaged one, filing for a refund while keeping the original, undamaged item.

To prevent this, taking photos before shipping and meticulously saving messages between buyers and sellers helps to prove an item’s good condition.

### Off-platform payment requests

Done in the guise of saving on platform fees, this disables Mercari’s escrow protection. Disputes are also harder to file since Mercari has no record of payments made.

### Fake photos for listings using stock photos or AI-generated ones

Photos look good for the item, until you see it on a stock photo website. Or worse, see a watermark telling that it’s AI-generated—a detail the bogus seller forgot to erase.

### Low prices that change upon checkout

Misleadingly low prices entice shoppers to buy immediately or in large quantities, only to find out a different price is calculated upon checkout. This practice is deceptive and must be reported immediately.

A similar scam involving [**fake and overpriced Switch 2 listings**](https://www.tokyoscope.blog/p/japans-mercari-cracks-down-on-nintendo?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) (most of which were “box-only” listings) overran Mercari Japan in 2025, prompting them to review their marketplace ban policy.

### Phishing scams

These often creep into your Mercari inbox or your email, prompting you to click a link for a free item, a discount, and other fraud offers. The URLs try to mimic Mercari’s legitimate links but bring you to an unsafe site, which may collect your personal information. Other scams also involve people posing as Mercari customer support. They will call or message you to do something with your account, claiming you will lose access if you don’t take action.

These scams can happen to anyone using the Mercari platform, so being vigilant is still the safest way to transact on Mercari. Remember the following safety measures:

- Communicate only within the app
- Refuse off-platform requests
- Document everything, from photos to conversations
- Track shipping and delivery
- Report anything suspicious

In general, Mercari is a safe online marketplace, given that sellers and buyers follow safety advice.

## Pros of Selling on Mercari

![two hands making the pros gesture](https://storage.ghost.io/c/e9/2c/e92c0268-0a3c-45b5-8c3a-b81ee6ef33fd/content/images/2026/03/business-thumbs-up-hand-gesture.jpg)

- **Simple selling process:** Mercari sellers can create listings manually or with AI help in less than 30 minutes.
- **Large market:** The platform has millions of users so there’s always someone looking for what you’re selling. It has hundreds of resale categories, so you can sell a wide variety of items if you want or stick to one.
- **Escrow payment:**Mercari keeps the buyer money safe until delivery is completed, and releases it only when the buyer is satisfied with the order.
- **A user-friendly mobile interface:**Mercari is keen on keeping its app user-friendly—a plus for users who want to make listings and manage their inventory from their phones.

## Cons of Selling on Mercari

![couple showing disagreement](https://storage.ghost.io/c/e9/2c/e92c0268-0a3c-45b5-8c3a-b81ee6ef33fd/content/images/2026/03/couple-showing-no-symbol-sign.jpg)

- **Competitive pricing:**Competition can be intense, especially for commonplace items with many sellers to choose from.
- **Seller fees may affect profit:** Shipping and seller fees affect the profit margin of the item. If not calculated beforehand, this may lead to smaller profits.
- **In-app ticket system:** Support is through a ticket system rather than speaking to a live agent. Users report varied response times for each concern, and automated responses sometimes feel inadequate to address issues.
- **Limited buyer return window:**It only takes three days after delivery for buyers to check and report a defect/issue with an item. Failing to report within this time may not make the buyer eligible for a refund or return.
- **Strict seller performance standards.**Mercari prefers sellers with fast shipping speed, low cancellation rates, and the number of disputes filed against the seller. These factors may not always be within the seller’s control, and yet could cause account restrictions if not followed.

## Who Should Sell on Mercari?

- sell mid-range fashion, toys, small electronics, books
- are declutterers
- thrift-flippers
- sell hard-to-find or trendy collectibles

Mercari isn’t for the sellers of:

- extremely high-ticket, luxury resale items
- large pieces of furniture
