As your reselling business evolves, you'll realize that there’s more to reselling than hitting the thrift shops and picking up a few items. You will feel the need to take a risk, either by branching to a more niche category for your inventory or by buying wholesale inventory.

But what exactly does wholesale inventory mean? In plain words, it is inventory you buy in bulk rather than by the piece. But wholesale means more than quantity. There are different kinds of wholesale inventory. If you buy without researching, it may overwhelm you and leave you with a[**death pile**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/death-pile-meaning-in-reselling?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)**.**

This sourcing guide saves you the headache: here we introduce major wholesale sourcing methods for resellers, and where exactly to get them. We’re also including the dos and don'ts of wholesale inventory and how to manage it efficiently without being stressed.

## What counts as wholesale inventory?

Wholesale inventory may be loosely defined as buying merchandise in bulk. However, “wholesale inventory” looks different from different resellers’ POVs. A beginning reseller may view a reseller bale as wholesale inventory; large-scale resellers may only consider liquidation pallets as one.

If you’re keen on buying wholesale inventory, a good question to ask is what stage of your resale journey are you in? Knowing this will help you decide what kind of wholesale inventory you need to buy, and where to get it.

## Common Types of Wholesale Inventory for Resellers

In resale, wholesale is often equated to bulk purchases. That includes liquidation pallets and truckloads, but estate sale lots, wholesale lots from online marketplaces, and clean-outs are also counted as wholesale.

### Wholesale lots

Wholesale lots are ideal for the reseller who wants to add inventory but can’t commit to larger bulk merchandise. Usually, they come in as little as 8–10 pieces per lot to up to a hundred.

These lots can be just anything: bed linen, [**shoes**](https://www.ebay.com/itm/358819129795?_skw=lot+of+shoes&itmmeta=01KY28YXEG85JXZAAXTSE1DK8E&hash=item538b4969c3:g:U2AAAeSwDB5qXbyN&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA0GfYFPkwiKCW4ZNSs2u11xBElVM2y0dskYBqFpEksfm8ADcpqh93eAufGjwZNRUKUI9fVdY7OvVECnz%2BTEv2RWx%2BE2Qcg6yhkKQjbcJXny0HZ4aaN0RvJjvrO95YFjRGfC0jiCmVphEALjbPyM%2FKvpbmqZAtwbc8vVTAnNEE%2F%2BeFPmzbKK6lQ2P6--NiEAEXOZUvX1K9i75nG91LfyFx5xYG03lrrj0yy%2B%2Fw4jhQis0LQLyURGojH23Ddtrhkwg%2BeCyVvp%2FpXcfRxQ87%2BGe%2BBYY%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_zX-8jwZw&ref=sellraze.ghost.io), collectible DVDs. Lots are usually grouped according to item category rather than an assortment of items.

### Closet clean-outs

Let’s say someone wants to revamp their wardrobe and initiates a closet clean-out fast. It’s a good chance to buy out the whole closet and resell pieces individually. Closet clean-outs can be from anyone who’s dropping or going up a dress size or two, an international student who needs to go home but has to leave clothes behind, or from a deceased family member whose family finally wants to let go.

### Estate sale bulk purchases

While[**estate sales**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/thrifting-from-estate-sales-whats-the-deal?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) are often known to yield one-of-a-kind, curated pieces, they are also wonderful places to buy in bulk. For example, one can score a closetful of dress shirts or a collection of vintage books. Many estate sale handlers are happy to let you walk away with “lots” instead of a piece or two.

If you’re lucky, you may chance upon their last day, where they’re eager to sell everything. However, every estate sale is different, so you might not always chance upon wholesale tableware or a roomful of furniture.

### Reseller bales

This type of wholesale inventory is common for clothing and other fabric merchandise. These are often sold by weight, and a bale usually is between 25–50 kg. [**Reseller bales**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/should-you-buy-a-reseller-bale-what-beginners-need-to-know-in-2026?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) are perfect when you want to focus on a certain clothing inventory, like graphic tees or activewear. There are mixed bales as well, containing an assortment of items.

Pam, our reseller friend, shares her experience of getting a small bale. “I got around 200– 300 pieces of vintage tees from a 45-kg bale. The sales from the shirts covered the cost of the bale, although there were some pieces that had plenty of holes and stains, though the bale was graded Grade A”, she recounts.

Bales are usually graded according to quality; however, there’s no one set standard when it comes to quality. Some wholesalers may declare a bale [**Grade A**](https://aeclothingpoland.com/products/grade-a-b?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)or EUC but still have flawed pieces, like what Pam experienced. Grade B or SUC bales can also have items that are EUC, or even NWT.

### Liquidation pallets

Next to reseller bales are [**liquidation pallets**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/liquidation-pallets-what-they-mean-for-resellers-in-2026?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)in terms of quantity. For clothing, a good visual is that several bales can fit inside a liquidation pallet—you get the idea. Clothing pallets often vary in their content in terms of sizes and quality; one pallet may yield NWT or NWOT items while the next one may not have much.

Also popular are general merchandise pallets, which contain an assortment of items. A pallet that has an itemized list of its contents and condition is called a manifested pallet. Pallets which have unlisted items of different conditions are referred to as unmanifested pallets, and are cheaper than a manifested one.

### Online wholesale marketplaces

Reselling websites like [**eBay**](https://www.ebay.com/itm/147347891046?_skw=used+clothes+bales&itmmeta=01KY7T2TWZ8SA6AJ9C84BH9DVH&hash=item224e9e6366:g:kW0AAeSw2ItqH1KE&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAAA8LB2JXbe%2Bh2pdWBqbR2c2DtCOCaEDBBNAZebSuJoeqxdnpX9oxTtT4mo3mitl2KvqUKXLWMNMlnjIgvI%2FXl6nyc1qSQ1fLZIYkfwY8quS1uUs11UhHZemZDlWWxPBWDxVD9m9cY71G3OuY3gx3cKLlygI3JZYh3TxJdQNkxxw478B2Eapn023Sp%2Bw8U4cTjyAiLKMO8Be4wTFRESSJeAuJ7AI5i6kzNaQzBXd5VLCxiFU8RCVlxx4M4IUWRuhs2KMc03YPR51KtwlT90nMA7Qmx95HqjET14KDm%2FNPzb4LuCFXWHIl9GUyddn5wyYcvqkQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBM3q6L-vFn&ref=sellraze.ghost.io)**,**[**Poshmark**](https://poshmark.com/listing/Bulk-Clothing-Bales-in-Mixed-Colors-680989429f034c3477c822ce?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)**,** and [**Depop**](https://www.depop.com/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) have listings for wholesale inventory. Local Facebook reselling groups and Facebook Marketplace itself are frequented by wholesalers and buyers.

You can also get wholesale inventory from online auction sites. [**Liquidation.com**](http://liquidation.com/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) is an example of this. Getting your wholesale inventory online is ideal when you want to buy lots, closet clean-outs, and small bulk purchases.

### Estate sale companies

Estate sale companies are also known to sell lots even if they’re not having an active auction sale. Ask if they have unsold inventory after holding an estate sale and they’ll be glad to give it to you in bulk for a price.

You can buy entire collections and avail of last-day discounts for bulk purchases from these companies.

### Bale wholesalers

Bale suppliers are found through reseller communities on social media and gain traction through recommendations rather than targeted ads. They range from local bale wholesalers who started reselling in smaller quantities before moving to wholesale, to big companies specializing in bales.

### Liquidation marketplaces

For large-scale purchase of bulk merchandise, liquidation marketplaces are the way to go. These platforms purchase directly from retailers and manufacturers themselves. They’re easy to look up on the internet too. If it’s your first time to buy one, pick a company that’s local or closest to you to save on shipping fees.

## Buying Wholesale: The Pros

Buying wholesale has its perks, including**lower cost per item.**You'll usually pay shipping only once, allowing you to spread the cost across more items. You'll also **get more inventory**, perfect for hitting your goals of scaling up. Plus, you’re not going back and forth to stores to stock up, saving you gas, time, and energy.

Sourcing wholesale also makes it easier to niche down. Instead of buying inventory from different sources, you can focus on one category at a time and learn what actually sells. Pam shares that buying wholesale helped her specialize. "For example, deciding to sell a bale of vintage denim lets me get a feel for how well this kind of clothing sells," she says. "I can test one bale at a time before deciding what to invest in next.”

## The Downsides of Wholesale Inventory

But even seasoned resellers like Pam aren’t immune to the cons of sourcing wholesale. One of the disadvantages is the **need for more storage space**. “I resell from our three-bedroom apartment, and two of the rooms are filled with merchandise.” A **higher upfront investment** is another drawback, along with a **slower listing process**, and the hard truth that**some items would not sell.**

“My first vintage tee bale turned a good profit, but it did not turn out very well for my second bale,” Pam shares further. “It has more damaged shirts than I expected. It’s so unlike sourcing at a thrift store where I inspect every item by hand before buying. I have no control over the quality of the entire bale,” she muses.

## Managing Wholesale Inventory Without the Overwhelm

The first thing a reseller encounters after sourcing wholesale is the overwhelm. Too many items to sort, to photograph, to list. Pam shares her strategy to tackling wholesale inventory right after purchase:

- **Sort items immediately.**Not just sort, inspect each item thoroughly. Her categories include for llisting, for repair, for donation, and for recycling
- **Clean and prep items for photographing and listing.**Repair items that are still good to resell.
- **Photograph items and draft listing descriptions.**Include researching relevant keywords to include in listing titles.
- **Calculate true cost per item before listing.**It’s better this way rather than [**randomly pricing an item**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/pricing-anxiety-choosing-a-number-and-hoping-for-the-best?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) while listing.
- **List as many items as you can in a day.**Some platforms allow bulk listing; take advantage of this feature.
- **Keep items organized and ready to ship.**
- **Batch reseller tasks by day.**For example, source by Sunday, clean by Monday, list on Tuesday, and so on.

This way, you’ll streamline the reselling process, and have time left for other tasks.

## Is Wholesale Inventory Worth It?

Yes, but not for everyone. It works best for resellers who already have enough experience to know what sells. It’s perfect for people with enough storage space to keep inventory safe and organized, and those whose sales are consistent.

New resellers should think twice before deciding to buy wholesale inventory. Avoid being enticed into buying in bulk because it seems cheaper. For sellers who already have a death pile waiting and deadstock items unsold for months, it’s better to source in smaller numbers. Wholesale inventory isn’t always the best for everyone.

Rather than choosing to go wholesale every time, examine if your business is ready for the large number of merchandise you have to manage. Starting small, learning what sells, and scaling when the time is right grows your business more than just taking a chance on wholesale inventory.
