Reseller terminology expands as fast as the sales trends dominate the market.

As a seller, you need to keep up with your buyers and talk reseller language. This time, we’re going to define HTF meaning reselling.

HTF stands for “**hard to find**”, a category for items that are rare or difficult to source. Here’s what HTF means for sellers and buyers.

## What does HTF mean?

HTF meaning in reselling refers to hard to find items. This term is used widely in [**eBay**](https://community.ebay.com/t5/Ask-a-Mentor/What-does-HTF-mean/qaq-p/29963100?ref=sellraze.ghost.io)and other reselling websites. HTF items, however, become rare due to different reasons.

Some items are HTF because they are limited edition and only a few pieces were made. Others become an HTF item because they are a product of a collaboration between designers and pop culture artists.

Other reasons resale items become an HTF include:

- Phased out models, especially in electronics
- Item prototypes
- Autographed items
- Vintage, one–of–a kind items
- Misprints (common in trading cards and other printed collectibles)
- Items with unique flaws
- Other items no longer produced
- Obsolete inventory or [**deadstock items**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/blog-deadstock-meaning-reselling?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) that become trending

A legitimate HTF item can be priced much higher than items considered secondhand staples. Part of the appeal is due to the effort made by the seller in sourcing the item. For example, an item exclusively released in one country can become an HTF in the US. HTFs are also easy to resell again.

Even flawed items can be sought after and therefore command a higher price. For sellers, acquiring an HTF item for resale can boost their earnings. The price of an HTF item depends on its rarity. Items with a verifiable background are more expensive compared to items that are just randomly labeled HTF. For example, an HTF trading card vetted by a collector is more likely to sell for a better price compared to run–of–the–mill cards.

Not all items can be considered HTF, even if you’ve gone to great lengths to acquire it. Back to our overseas example, items that are available in one country but not in the US cannot be called HTF if they’re mass-produced.

## HTF vs OOAK—what’s the difference?

While HTFs are rare items that fetch a higher price, there is a similar category that capitalizes on its uniqueness. OOAK stands for **one of a kind**items. They can be items where only one item was made, or where only a limited number of similar items. OOAKs are often handmade, like some jewelry makers on [**Etsy**](https://www.etsy.com/?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) sell; or customized for a certain person, let’s say an actor or royalty.

There are also **white whale** items. Technically, they’re HTF; people look for sentimental reasons, Others are just obsessed with getting these items. White whales vary from buyer to buyer because the motivation behind buying them is personal.

On the other hand, there are bread-and-butter items. They rake in consistent sales for your shop, may be priced in the low-to-mid range, but are always in demand, no matter the season. Compared to selling HTFs and OOAKs, where you can make a big sale from one item, bread-and-butter items lend consistency to your sales. Examples of bread-and-butter items are basics from [**BOLO**](https://www.sellraze.com/blog/what-are-bolo-brands-explaining-the-hype-behind-these-hot-items?ref=sellraze.ghost.io) brands.

Here’s a table comparing the three.

| Term | Stands for | What it means in practice |
| --- | --- | --- |
| HTF | Hard to Find | A sought-after item that is not readily available anywhere |
| OOAK | One of a Kind | Handcrafted items with zero to minimal duplicates |
| White whale | HTFs but more personal | Particular items that hold sentimental value for the buyer |
| Bread and Butter | Sales staples | Items that consistently sell in your shop |

## How to use HTF in your listings

- **Use HTF in your listing title, and in the description.** Doing this helps buyers find you more easily. They should not need to scroll past walls of text just to find the HTF description. However, include the word HTF in the description, just to be sure.
- **Discuss the origin of your HTF in the description.** Buyers trust you more if they feel you know what you are selling. Including a short history or origin of your HTF items boosts legitimacy, especially when you have verifiable sources.
- **Use HTF sparingly.**Don't automatically label old or vintage items as HTF. Also, scouring an estate sale for three hours just to find a certain item does not make it an HTF (when it can be found in another thrift store).

## Quick summary

- **HTF** means rare or difficult-to-source items, often sold for a higher price.
- It matters for sellers because it can boost their sales. Buyers benefit from having a high-value item that they can either collect or resell.
- For sellers: Verify the status of the item with research before declaring it as an HTF.
